Frequently Asked Questions

Are Microblading and other Permanent Makeup techniques really tattooing?

Yes. Permanent makeup/cosmetic tattooing, which includes microblading, is indeed tattooing makeup. It is different from traditional tattooing in that permanent makeup implants pigment only into the upper layer of the skin -- the epidermis-- and uses specialized needles and pigments formulated specifically for the face. Traditional tattooing goes deeper, into the dermis of the skin. As a result, cosmetic tattoos are expected to fade unlike traditional tattoos, and will require periodic touch ups and color refreshers. That is why permanent makeup is often called Semi-permanent makeup. Fading is desired as it allows the artist to adjust shape and color over the years with the changes that may occur with clients' natural coloration, face shape, and preferences.

Does it hurt?

For all procedures, two different types of highly effective topical anesthetics (numbing creams or gels) are used to help numb the areas to be tattooed. Some degree of discomfort is to be expected. Pain tolerance varies from person to person, but in general it is a tolerable experience, and discomfort is mild. Every effort is made to keep you as comfortable as possible for the duration of your procedure. (Please note that having your procedure done during menstruation may increase your sensitivity to pain.)

What can I expect during my procedure?

I will first work with you to establish the design and shape of your eyebrows or eyeliner. For eyebrows, much time is given to measuring for symmetry and balance with your features. I consider it a collaborative effort between us in deciding what is the best fit for your face and preference. Once the design is finalized the numbing process begins. Topical numbing gels take time to absorb into the skin and take effect, usually between 15-30 minutes, depending on the procedure. The tattooing process follows, as I continue to apply numbing agents periodically throughout. After your procedure is done we discuss aftercare and take our post-procedure photos.

How will I look immediately after my procedure?

Your new cosmetic tattoo will appear darker and more bold in color and shape in the first few days. This will gradually lighten and soften during the healing process. You can expect lightening and shrinkage of 30-50% from the initial appearance. You may experience some minimal redness and swelling in the tattooed area in the first day, which will often quickly subside. The tattooed area will feel somewhat like a sunburn afterward but there should be minimal discomfort. You will be able to resume your normal daily activity and interactions after your procedure. (See "Before & After Your Procedure")

What tools do you use?

I use tattoo devices specifically designed for permanent makeup, with sterile, single-use disposable needle cartridges.

What are your safety practices?

I only use disposable, single-use pre-sterilized needles and needle cartridges for all procedures. Pigments used are all of the highest quality and are made in the USA from approved compounds, formulated specifically for permanent cosmetic use. I prepare for each client with new disposable barriers that are discarded immediately after the procedure is done. The procedure room and design areas are disinfected between every client, and the studio is kept clean throughout the day. I uphold a clean and safe work space according to stringent standards set by the San Diego Department of Environmental Health, and maintain certified training on blood-borne pathogens annually.

How long will my cosmetic tattoo last?

This varies by individual as many factors will affect the retention of permanent makeup. Variations in skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, medication, beauty treatments, and aftercare are just a few of the examples of what can affect how long a cosmetic tattoo will last. Fading will occur, requiring periodic maintenance with color refreshers and touch ups. In general, cosmetic tattoos can last anywhere between 1-4 years before needing a color and shape refresher.

What if Iā€™m pregnant or breastfeeding?

I will not tattoo you. For many reasons, here are few:

  • Your immune system is lowered, meaning it takes forever to heal.

  • Your hormones can cause skin conditions like hyperpigmentation.

  • If you get an infection, you could pass it to your baby.

  • Your skin may become more sensitive.

  • Higher chances of fainting.

  • Your blood volume raises an average of 25%, this means heavy bleeding.

Do I need to schedule a consultation before booking a procedure appointment?

Consultations are free of charge to anyone who would like to meet and discuss procedures and options before booking an appointment, but not required. Consultations are required if you are in need of corrective work, or have had your brows done by someone else. If you book an appointment without disclosing previous work your deposit may be forfeited and your appointment cancelled.
